Where to go when you need car repairs

By Christopher Robert Norris

For those of us who know little about cars, there is nothing more stressful than when our car breaks down for some unexplainable reason. What is even worse is taking your car in for a service and being faced with several "Problems" that you previously had no clue of. How do you really know you can trust a place? How do you know they are not going to take advantage? It's an unpleasant position to be in.

It does help to know that no one expects you to be an expert on cars. Mechanics are professionals and they are paid for their expertise and skill. You are good at whatever you do, so don't feel stressed about the fact that you are entering into uncharted territory.

The best way to find a good mechanic is by word of mouth. If several people can vouch for them and report positive experiences then it won't matter if their waiting room looks a little grimy. Other people's words that you trust will trump a clean waiting room. Many people advise you to look at the certificates on the wall instead of the grime on the floor for a real indicator of quality. Some good mechanics are just never going to be very clean and tidy...this does not mean they won't do a good job. However if you know nothing about a place and it also happens to be a pigsty, it's a good reason to look elsewhere.

One trick that many people have fallen prey to is of course being told they need a new part, when they don't. This happens because mechanics can then sell you a new part, and then take your old part and sell it on and make a good profit on it. It is a good idea to just ask them to show you the part they are going to replace so they cannot just spirit it away claiming it was worn out when it wasn't. This happens a lot with break disks.

Not all mechanics are great with people, and it helps if they have someone front of house to properly deal with customers, so do not be immediately put off by poor customer service. A good mechanic doing a good job at a good price is worth more than perfect manners and customer service. If you can get both together, then you're really landed on a good deal!
