Natural Pesticides And Environmentally Friendly Gardening Techniques

By Steve Vanwoude

Gardening has its share of positive experiences but also troubles. While gardening can be a delightful and healthy exercise, garden pests can spoil all the excitement. To be able to control pests and still keep an environmentally safe garden, an individual should select organic pesticides. These pesticides have an advantage over traditional types, because pests don't tend to become resistant to them even with continual use. Similarly, organically developed chemicals will not typically produce the harmful side-effects that can be caused by by synthetic insecticides, making your garden a safer place. From vinegar to garlics, neem seeds to boric acid, there are many organic compounds for pest control. All one has to do is begin looking in the right place.

One may either look for organic insecticides designed to control specific problems, or use an all-purpose organic-based product. For example, if your garden is troubled by leaf-feeding pests that are responsible for causing fungal diseases, using garlic bulbs or garlic-based products can be useful. In the same way, hot pepper wax is another non-toxic compound that can be applied as an all-purpose insect control agent. Many pesticide products based on these naturally occurring materials can often be used to control garden pests.

Using biological chemicals may also pose smaller hazards of toxicity. A biological insecticide made from Germ Thuringiensis combats caterpillars, gnats and 2 kinds of beetles like the Elm-leaf beetle and Colorado-potato beetle. Botanical insecticides such as Neem or Azadirachtin, can be helpful in killing beetles and pests that eat the leaves of the plants. Other organic control agents based on botanical plants, include Rotenone, Ryania or Ryanodine, Sabadilla, Pyrethrins and Pyrethrum. Insecticides based on these plants, may require care in their use such as avoiding application during sunlight and avoiding a wet environment. Organic products may also call for repeated applications to maintain good control over pest populations.

If maggots and moths are adversely effecting the garden, using a Kaolin clay-based insect control is helpful. Few people may term boric acid to be organic, however it is known to be less toxic and considered as an organic product. Boric acid will not result in irritation unless it is inhaled. Termites, fleas and a few types of beetles are susceptible to boric acid. Organic fungicides being sold are manufactured from minerals like potassium bicarbonate and lime sulfur and from botanical products such as neem oil.

Vinegar-based herbicides can be extremely beneficial to help eliminate weeds in the garden Though vinegar-based treatments aren't toxic, a person must be careful to avoid contact with the eyes. Another organic compound, corn-gluten meal, can frequently be applied to kill weed seeds, by obstructing their germination. Corn-gluten meal acts as a fertilizer as well, as it includes nitrogen which is essential for plant growth.

This has been a brief summary of a few of the products that can be bought that don't pose toxic risks. However it is always extremely important to carefully research the solution you are considering and read and follow the directions that may be included with these solutions to prevent any possible harmful side-effects and safety issues.
