Internet and Home Surveillance

By Alexandre Pantillori

A few years ago you had no way of keeping an eye on things at home cheaply and easily while you were overseas on a vacation or business trip. These days however, keeping tabs on your home while you're away is quite possible. Even when you're on the other side of the world you can keep an eye on your property and all you need is a mobile Internet enabled device and of course, an Internet connection.

Even though it sounds hi-tech and cutting edge the technology has become much more accessible in recent years. Hardware for security monitoring has really dropped in price lately and anybody can use it from virtually any place in the world. Curiosity and a desire to learn new and interesting things is all you need to take advantage of this exciting technology.

To use these types of equipment, you"ll need a reliable connection to the Internet. The Internet is the heart and soul of distance surveillance equipment, enabling you to keep a check on your home from hundreds of thousands of miles away. Before purchasing an Internet powered surveillance system you first need to make sure that you have a fairly high speed Internet connection going to your home. I wouldn't recommend dial-up due to the low speeds being way too slow for video broadcasting.

You have two methods of surveillance to choose from depending on the features and complexity that you require. One method requires the use of a PC. Several surveillance cameras are stringed together and set up to record what they see or to only activate once movement is detected in an area. Price will be the biggest determining factor on whether or not you can adjust these settings.

The computer plays the part of security screen and video recorder. You can view the playback via the monitor in real time or play a file that has been recorded to the HDD or hard disk drive. To watch the video from a distane will require the PC to be connected to the Internet through your ISP (Internet Service Provider). A unique user name and password will normaly be required in order for you to access the broadcast from the cameras. You will be able to log in any time to make sure that everything is as it should be or to view video that has been recorded.

The other solution you have available is much easier. Normally, this solution is used to check on a home through a single surveillance camera. With this setup you will be able to use one camera through your IP (Internet Protocol) address. By setting it up through your IP, all you need to do is check on things is to link directly to your IP address. This method works similar to a webcam, in the sense that it streams video around the clock.

No matter which solution you choose, both are somewhat easy to use. Of course the second solution is much easier to use and setup, although it does have it's downsides as well. Both systems have great features and both have the ability to log in at any time.

Anytime you need to monitor your home from far away, home surveillance and the Internet is all you need. The Internet is a common commodity these days, capable of doing far more than anyone ever thought possible. By investing in a surveillance system that utilizes the Internet - you'll be able to keep a watchful eye on your home from wherever the road takes you.
