Writing Effective Headlines for Your Blog Posts

By Kayla Hooper

Headlines are a critical component of the process of running a successful blog, which isn't as hard to do as you might think because all that's required is to make sure you are taking the right steps at the right time. Here's how you write blog post titles that convert ...

Make a Promise: There are lots of way to get the attention of your audience and get them to read your post. Making promises and claims that you can back up is one of the most effective methods. These types of titles can skyrocket your articles into the stratosphere if you do things right. Let's face it, people are always interested in getting something more than they bargained for, or something that is highly enticing and promises them a certain result. You will immediately pull people in to read the whole post because they will be curious regarding the offer you make in your headline. You have to pay special care that your content complies with the headline you've written and it's good enough to make an excellent impression on your target audience. If your audience feels misled because your content doesn't offer them what they were promised in the title, the strategy will backfire and you will end up losing readers.

Avoid Overselling: You can end up overselling yourself when trying to increase your reader base. You need to avoid making the big error of promising things you can't deliver or injecting too much hype just so people will enter and read your article. No matter how tempting it is to create headlines that are full of hype but have no relevancy to the content of the article, you need to avoid doing it because it will only serve to hurt you. You will end up with a disappointed audience if you make promises that you are going to deliver something big and then don't keep them. You won't end up going too far if you rely solely on hype; you need quality content to do that. Work hard towards creating content that is relevant and original, and you'll automatically be able to write titles that give better results than the others.

Include Power Words: If you've looked into copywriting to any degree, you are likely aware of the value of using power words. Some words seem to flip an emotional switch in the reader, making them excited or enthusiastic, so you want to take advantage of them and include them in your title. However, not all terms are equal - "Free", for example, is a lot stronger than "Cheap". You need to identify what kind of words your target audience connects with and ensure that you're including these in your blog post titles to get the best results.

Writing a blog post that features top quality content is not a big issue if you know what you are talking about but it doesn't help if your readers will overlook your post. It doesn't matter what the circumstances are, you always need to focus on writing relevant headlines for your posts.
